Gyanvapi mosque
The Gyanvapi Mosque is a mosque in the city of Varanasi in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh .
history
The mosque was built by the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb . The building is located north of Dashaswarmedh Ghat on the western bank of the Ganges . Originally, there was at this point a Hindu Shiva - temple , the Kashi Vishwanath Temple . This Hindu temple complex was destroyed several times by the Islamic Mughal rulers and the Gyanvapi Mosque was finally built on the same site around 1670. The collapsing minarets were restored by the British James Prinsep in the 1830s .
Around 1780, Hindu rulers built the new Kashi Vishwanath Temple in the immediate vicinity . Some Hindu preachers and Indian nationalists are currently calling for the mosque to be torn down and a Shiva temple to be rebuilt there.
