St Munn's Parish Church , also Kilmun Kirk , is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish village of Kilmun . It is only separated by a road from the shores of Holy Loch , a branch of the Firth of Clyde . In 1971 St Munn's Parish Church was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A. Beyond the church is the cemetery where the Campbells of Argyll were buried between the 15th and 20th centuries.

history

At the site of St Munn's Parish Church there were already previous church buildings. The existence of a church at this location has been documented since the 13th century at the latest. The ruined tower, which still towers next to the church, probably does not date from this time, but belonged to a collegiate church that Duncan Campbell of Lochawe had built in 1442. After the choir was redesigned in 1688 to use the building as the main church of the Parish , this structure was largely demolished in 1841.

The current church was built in the 1840s according to plans by the architect Thomas Burns . One of the motives for the new building was the desire to create a larger space to accommodate the increasing number of summer holidaymakers arriving. In 1898 and 1899, the architect Peter McGregor Chalmers redesigned the interior. The cemetery is the resting place of Elizabeth Blackwell , one of the earliest medical women.
