from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gyrth Godwinson (* around 1030 ; † 14 October 1066 ) was the son of Earl Godwin Wulfnothson of Wessex and brother of the brief English king Harold Godwinson . Among other things, he was the Earl of East Anglia .

Gyrth offered his royal brother Harald II to lead the Anglo-Saxon army in the battle of Hastings so as not to surrender the kingdom completely in the event of a possible defeat. Harald should thereby gain time to raise new fresh troops, since the Anglo-Saxons had suffered heavy losses from the previous battle of Stamford Bridge . The king refused this offer, however, both brothers died alongside another brother Leofwine Godwinson in battle.
