Háttatal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Háttatal of the Snorra Edda , the list of verses, is the fourth part of the Skald textbook by Snorri , which was written around 1222 and 1223 respectively. Snorri himself wrote this poem, which consists of 102 stanzas, in which he presents various meters of Skaldic poetry. It is therefore considered untranslatable.

The Háttatal is a verse doctrine to which Snorri also added a prose commentary. In addition, the poem is

  • an enumeration of all Snorri known or felt to be representative Germanic Old Norse verse forms;
  • an award poem for Snorri's friend Jarl Skúli and the Norwegian King Hákon Hákonarson .

In terms of content, the Háttatal consists of three parts:

  • of which the first (stanzas 1–30) King Hákon,
  • the second (stanza 31-67) Jarl Skúli and
  • the third (verse 68-102) is dedicated to both men.
