Hemobilia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As hemobilia refers to a bleeding within the bile ducts , usually with leakage of blood from the major duodenal papilla (papilla). It can result from a liver biopsy or a bruise of the liver . This creates a false aneurysm and thus a connection between a hepatic artery and a bile duct (arteriobiliary fistula).

Hemobilia can cause upper abdominal discomfort, jaundice, and bleeding into the gastrointestinal tract with bloody vomiting or tarry stools, among other things . Diagnosis is made using duodenoscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, and celiacography.

Smaller injuries to the liver arteries usually heal spontaneously, and the blood clot within the bile ducts is gradually dissolved. If the hemobilia is larger, the injured artery must be closed surgically.
