A hanging chair (also hanging chair or hanging chair , rarer hammock chair or Traumschwinger ) is a continuous sitting, has no contact with the ground. The hanging seat is mostly made from the same material as the hammock and is handcrafted. Hanging seats can be removed and rolled up. In contrast to the swing , there is no swinging swinging movement, but only a small pendulum or rotating movement. Through this movement and the extensive support of the body, the hanging seat or armchair should enable relaxed sitting. You lie in the hammock, while the more upright upper body in the hammock makes reading, writing or other sedentary activities easier.

Origin and material

The Maya are credited with discovering the hammock about 1000 years ago. In Central and South America it is known as "Hamaca". The hanging seats come from South and Central America and were only designed in the 18th century after the hammock that came to Europe with Christopher Columbus . Originally the hanging chairs like the hammocks were made of a material that was spun from the bark of the Hamak tree, which is where the name "Hamaca" comes from. The sisal plant was later used as a basic material and cotton has only been used for about 60 years . The reason for this may be that cotton is the softest and therefore most comfortable material. In addition to cotton fabric, modern versions of the hanging seats are also available in leather or weather-resistant plastic textiles (micro-mesh). The latter are often salt water and UV light resistant and can therefore hang outside all year round. Another convenience is achieved with spreader bars. The side parts or side walls are thus kept apart to an extent that facilitates boarding and enables a comfortable sitting position. Additional options for arm rests can be built in. A footrest is tied to the spreader bar or the fastening ring with another rope.

The variety of hanging seats available today is great. Colombian hanging seats have the hand-twisted braids at the end as a special feature. They are also made of cotton and are very robust.

Hanging caves

For newborns there are so-called "hanging caves" made of fabric. The appearance of these hanging caves resembles an oversized drop or cone tent. A child can lie on a pillow in it.

Hanging chair

The hanging chair evolved from the hammock. Due to the flexible suspension, sitting loses its rigid statics and gains a dynamic that is otherwise only known from a hammock .

  • Flexible net hanging chairs come from Nicaragua , for example, and have a special type of weaving, made from colorful cotton fabrics, they adapt well to the shape of the body. There are also single-colored, Brazilian hanging chairs that end on both sides with a four-row handcrafted mesh. This is also suitable for the living room. These hanging seats are knotted as macrame nets.
  • The Finnish interior and furniture designer Eero Aarnio designed a rigid hanging chair in 1968 with the Bubble Chair, a hanging chair made of transparent acrylic. Rigid hanging chairs in basket shape are also made from rattan . The design can range from round to oval to teardrop shape.

Assembly

The hanging seat only needs one central suspension point. It is usually hung from a rope and can be attached to strong tree branches from a height of approx. 220 cm, for example. For mounting in the interior, a strong hook is usually attached to the ceiling or a correspondingly dimensioned beam or protrusion is used to throw a rope over it.

There are also quick-to-assemble and height-adjustable hanging stands for free-standing installation of a hanging seat. They are available in different shapes and materials such as stainless steel, spruce wood, bamboo or made of steel tubes. The hanging stands can be set up anywhere in the room and can therefore be flexibly positioned to save space.

For the hanging seats there are also footrests that can be hung or knotted on the spreader bar or fastening ring. There are other accessories such as poly hemp ropes, steel springs (which then serve as shock absorbers), carabiners or a rope figure eight that are used to fix the ropes.
