The church

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Härkeberga ( Härkeberga kyrka ) is a medieval peasant church in the municipality of Enköping in the Swedish province of Uppsala län and the historic province of Uppland . It is known for its almost completely preserved painting by the school of Albertus Pictor from around 1480.

The construction

The church, built at the beginning of the 14th century, is a simple towerless hall made of granite blocks, whose original wooden barrel vault was replaced by a three-bay brick vault around 1480.

The church has a triumphal cross from the first half of the 14th century. The pews date from 1755, the painting has been renewed. The pulpit was created in 1791 by the court sculptor Jean-Baptiste Masreliez in Stockholm.

The painting of the church, where the red color has turned into black, is significant, so that it looks gloomy today. In the choir yoke the sacrifice of Christ and Marian scenes are shown, in the middle yoke u. a. the salvation of the godly and the punishment of their enemies, in the Westjoch u. a. the story of Jacob, Isaac and Esau, the Manna rain, the dance around the golden calf, the Last Judgment, the mercy seat and the Assumption of Mary. In the vestibule added around 1480, a grotesque monster, a devil helping the peasant women with butter, a milk hare sucking the milk from strange cows from the udder.

The rectory

Prästgård (vicarage) is below the church on the site of the former village. Some wooden buildings have been moved to it.
