Vila Algarve (2013)

The Vila Algarve is a residential building in the Mozambican capital Maputo . The building, which was built in 1934 and was later listed as a listed building, was the seat of the Portuguese secret police PIDE / DGS at the end of the Portuguese colonial era in Mozambique . It is located at the intersection of Avenida Mártires da Machava / Avenida Ahmed Sekou Touré .

history

The building was erected in 1934 as a home for Portuguese people . Remarkable to this day - in addition to the historicizing architecture - the attached azulejos , they are considered a rare example of naturalistically decorated tiles from the beginning of the 20th century.

With the beginning of the colonial wars in the Portuguese colonies of Guinea, Angola and Mozambique , the Portuguese secret police PIDE expanded its activities to the territories of the colonies. She confiscated the building and established her seat there. Many resistance fighters were tortured in this building during the colonial war . The Mozambican poet José Craveirinha tells of his experiences in the house in three of his works. Other known inmates included Rui Knopfli and Malangatana Ngwenya .

After Mozambique gained independence, the building remained empty, partly because of its past; among other things, homeless people moved in there. In 1999 the Mozambican Bar Association acquired the building and planned to set up its headquarters there. The association estimated the costs at 400,000 euros. The association later withdrew from its plans and handed the building over to the Ministry of Culture. A “Museum on the Liberation of Mozambique” is to be set up there on behalf of the Ministry of Resistance Fighters.

Since 2011 the building has been in the preselection for a list of monuments for the city of Maputo. In the Portuguese monument database Sistema de Informação para o Património Arquitectónico , which also includes works by former Portuguese colonies, it is registered with the number 31730.
