Rui Knopfli

Rui Manuel Correia Knopfli (born August 10, 1932 in Inhambane , Portuguese East Africa , † December 25, 1997 in Lisbon , Portugal ) was a Mozambican writer and poet.

Life

Rui Knopfli was a descendant of Portuguese immigrants . After studying in South Africa , he worked as a journalist, literature and film critic in Lourenço Marques , today's Maputo. As an opponent of colonialism , he wrote for the dissident magazines A Tribuna and A Voz de Moçambique , which called for independence from Portugal . During this time, his poetic work began. He also translated English-speaking authors. After the country gained independence in 1975, Knopfli left Mozambique and went to Great Britain , where he worked for the Portuguese embassy from 1975 to 1997. He also published in Portuguese magazines. In 1984 his poetic work was awarded the PEN Club Prize. Rui Knopfli died on Christmas Day 1997 in Lisbon. In 2003, an anthology of his poems entitled "Obra poética" was published posthumously .

The Poetry Knopflis is strongly influenced by the search of his identity and the conflict between Europe and Africa. Love, melancholy and nature meditations are subjects of his poems. His language is characterized by slang elements.
