Héroïde funèbre ( German: 'Heldenklage') is a symphonic poem by Franz Liszt . The work for orchestra was composed with interruptions between 1849 and 1857. The approximate playing time is 26 minutes.

Work history

In 1830, stimulated by the unrest in Paris , Liszt planned to compose a revolutionary symphony in several movements. However, he only completed a first draft. In 1849, when the revolution flared up in Hungary , he put his plan into concrete terms: the symphony was to be in five movements and use patriotic themes such as the Rákóczi March and the Marseillaise . In 1851 Liszt commissioned Joachim Raff to orchestrate the fragment, of which only the first movement, the Hero's Lament, has been completed. Whether Raff actually made the instrumentation is questionable, however, as there were disagreements between him and Liszt. Raff certainly had a share in the early Weimar version of the work, but the final version, composed between 1854 and 1856, was very likely only by Liszt, since Liszt had already mastered the orchestral instrumentation well himself from around 1854, so he had the support of Joseph Joachim Raff and August Conradis was no longer dependent.

The world premiere took place on November 10, 1857 in Breslau .

music

The heroic suit is not based on a direct program . Rather, it is about setting the pervasive pain and grief over (war) dead to music. The piece can be viewed as a funeral march in the form of a symphony movement, which is mainly due to the fact that it was actually intended as part of a symphony. The march repeats itself over the course of the year and is increased with each time until Héroïde funèbre reaches its climax, the supposed victory. However, the work flows in a low-key, deeply sad final section, which is supposed to symbolize the negation of the hero cult and the glorification of war.

The use of percussion instruments such as the bell and the tam-tam is striking . In this work, Liszt harmoniously anticipates the language of his later works.
