The Möddinghofe cave area in Wuppertal is shown as a natural monument in the Wuppertal-Nord landscape plan under 2.6.17 .

Location and description

The cave area is located in the northeast of Wuppertal in the Linderhauser Senke , near the city limits to Schwelm , in the Möddinghofe area . It is located in a wooded area with the Meine Brook at the Hölkerfeld junction (south of Linderhauser Straße) to the industrial area Nachbarebeck. In the breakthrough valley of the karst water - the Meine - which temporarily falls dry, there are some stream rapids and rock outcrops to the east as well as stream shrinkages .

The cave area includes the named caves, the Himmelfahrt-Ponorhöhle , the Erdmännkes Kuhle and the Meinebach-Ponorhöhle .

A proposal to designate a natural monument was made in 2007 by geologist Thomas Wardenbach after an investigation of the city's geotopes .
