Emergence

The Hülser Bruch is a leveling from the final phase of the penultimate Ice Age ( Saale Ice Age ) about 140,000 years ago, and the 63 meter high Hülser Berg to the north is the rest of the compression moraine . In the final phase of the penultimate Ice Age, the glaciers on the Lower Rhine piled up walls made of clay and stones. After the ice had thawed, these so-called compression moraines remained as clear bumps. Wind and weather leveled them; Above all, however, the Rhine, which kept moving its bed, was responsible for the erosion. The shallow meltwater channels and depressions in the area were leveled by the material washed away by the Rhine. The Hülser Bruch is one such leveling.

Name designation

The term “ break ” comes from earlier times when the entire area was much more humid than it is today. High groundwater and clayey layers of earth are unsuitable for agriculture, so that the area was only used to procure firewood and litter. The or the break was used as a word for swamps with (possibly former) bush or forest. ( Low German Brook, Brock, Broich, Brauck , corresponding to Old High German bruoh , Middle High German bruoch , Old English broces , Dutch broek ).
