H1 (Paralympics)
H1 is a starting class for athletes in Paralympic para cycling for athletes in the partial sports of track cycling and road cycling . The division into classes indicates the degree of functional disability of an athlete that is relevant to competition . The membership of athletes in the starting class is outlined as follows:
“Class H1 cyclists have to start lying down on a handbike. One of the following minimum criteria must also be met:
- complete paraplegia in the area of the cervical spine (C6) or above - or
- complete loss of leg functions and trunk functions as well as restricted elbow function and restricted hand function - or
- severe ataxia, athetosis, muscle hypertension with impaired elbow function - or
- Symptoms of paralysis in all four limbs with moderate to severe spasticity in all four limbs.
The following applies:
- the athlete must lie on the handbike and only use his arms to propel the handbike. "
