H4 (Paralympics)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

H4 is a starting class for athletes in Paralympic para cycling for athletes in the partial sports of track cycling and road cycling . The division into classes indicates the degree of functional disability of an athlete that is relevant to competition . The membership of athletes in the starting class is outlined as follows:

“Class H4 cyclists are not able to crouch on their knees and have to start lying down on a handbike. Both squatting on the handbike and the use of two-wheelers or three-wheelers are not possible due to the physical impairment. One of the following minimum criteria must also be met:

  • complete paraplegia in the lower part of the thoracic spine (Th11) or below - or
  • no to marginal leg function and normal to almost normal trunk stability - or
  • incomplete loss of leg function (e.g. incomplete paraplegia) together with other impairments that prevent starting while crouching - or
  • Bilateral paralysis of the legs and ataxia, athetosis or muscle hypertension at the same time, with the upper extremities being almost unaffected - or
  • Unilateral paralysis with moderate spasticity, the legs are more severely impaired.

The following applies:

  • the athlete must lie on the handbike and essentially uses his arms to propel the handbike. "
