H5 (Paralympics)

H5 is a starting class for athletes in Paralympic para cycling for athletes in the partial sports of track cycling and road cycling . The division into classes indicates the degree of functional disability of an athlete that is relevant to competition . The membership of athletes in the starting class is outlined as follows:

“Class H5 cyclists are able to crouch on their knees and can use both arms and torso to move handbikes. Two-wheelers or three-wheelers cannot be used due to the physical impairment. One of the following minimum criteria must also be met:

  • complete paraplegia in the lower part of the thoracic spine (Th11) or below - or
  • double amputation in the knee or below - or
  • unilateral amputation above the knee or below the knee, together with other impairments - or
  • incomplete loss of leg function (e.g. incomplete paraplegia) - or
  • Unilateral paralysis with mild spasticity, the legs are more severely impaired - or
  • Bilateral paralysis of the legs with mild spasticity - or
  • mild to moderate athetosis and ataxia.

The following applies:

  • the athlete must crouch on their knees and use both arms and torso to propel the handbike. "
