Kioniskos for Hieronymos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kioniskos for Hieronymos is a funerary monument in the ancient Athenian cemetery Kerameikos .

The Kioniskos for Hieronymos is one of the few grave monuments of this kind that protrudes from the crowd. In accordance with applicable law against grave luxury was just a simple, also for Hieronymos hymettischem marble built manufactured Kionikos. As an exception to the current rule, the deceased was granted an ivy wreath in relief for the grave monument erected on a small tumulus with a stuccoed surface. A formerly colored painting is very likely.

Hieronymos was a famous and successful Athenian actor. In the period from about 285 to 280 BC He was able to win an important victory in the drama competitions of the Pythian Games in Delphi . The ivy wreath on the Kioniskos alludes to this success. On the Kioniskos only the first name of the actor was written, which spoke for his high fame, since a further explanation did not seem important.

The Kioniskos was found in 1870 during excavations by the Athens Archaeological Society under Athanasios S. Rhousopoulos south of the grave road, between the burial area of Stratonides and Eudemos and the burial area of a young woman in situ , i.e. at the original site. Today it is kept in the Epigraphic Museum .
