history

1982: NLA game HC Gym-Biel Otmar St. Gallen with 1200 spectators in the Gymer sports hall on the lake.

The history of the handball club HC Gym Biel has its origins on March 18, 1966, when 15 gymnasts got together and founded the second handball club in Biel after HBC Biel. The fourth division started in the old Logengasse gym, where only five field players were played due to the narrow building. In 1967 they rose to the 3rd division, 1968 to the 2nd division and 1969 to the 1st division.

National League B

After six years, he was promoted to the NLB in 1972 under coach Heinz Suter. After a 5th place in 1972/73, however, the relegation had to be accepted in 1974 after various departures, a certain aging, lack of competition and a lost promotion / relegation game against Länggasse Bern.

The following year, the team was again champions in the first division, but missed promotion. A season later they rose again to the National League B. At that time the association had 80 members, 5 teams and 3 student teams.

National League A (1981–1985)

In the following years the first men's team achieved two 4th and then two 2nd places. In 1980/81 the team was able to celebrate promotion to the National League A with a win in the last game against ATV Basel, who were first in the table with the same number of points.

The championship was initially played in 18 qualifying rounds, before the first six contested the championship and the last four the relegation round, the last two of which were relegated. Despite three initial defeats, the team managed to keep the league. Also in the 1982/83 season the goal of relegation was achieved with a 9 point lead over the relegation place. In the following season they achieved participation in the championship round, but had to relegate to League B a year later in the 1984/85 season.

1985: Merger with HBC Biel to form HS Biel

After years of competition for supremacy in regional handball, the voices calling for a collaboration or merger increased in both the HBC Biel and the HC Gym. In 1984 both clubs agreed to an association at extraordinary general meetings: the HC Gym on May 25, 1984 with 75:16 votes with 2 abstentions, the HBC on June 21, 1984 with 44: 2. On February 14, 1985, a merger general assembly took place in the aula of the trade school. HBC Biel and HC Gym Biel were dissolved and transferred to the HS (handball sport) Biel.
