The HESO (short for Autumn Fair Solothurn ) is a commercial exhibition that takes place every year from mid to late September in the Swiss city of Solothurn . With over one hundred thousand visitors, it is one of the largest trade fairs in the region.
The exhibition venue is the Rythalle Solothurn near the Baseltor, which is expanded by additional marquees for the HESO. The area is extended to the south on the Chantierwiese (above the Baseltor car park) and to the west in the Schanzengraben and to the north at the soldier memorial.
Since the HESO occasionally had to be interrupted for a day due to the Federal Prayer Day , a motion was launched in November 2004 which was to downgrade the Prayer Day from a major public holiday to a general day of rest and thus would have enabled the HESO to open at least half a day on the Prayer Day. In the cantonal referendum on "Amendment of the law on public rest days" in April 2005, however, the people voted against accepting the bill, which meant that the HESO had to continue to be closed during bedtime.
After the total revision of the law on public rest days was accepted by the people at the cantonal referendum on May 18, 2014, the HESO was able to open its doors on prayer day for the first time in 2014.
