HE 0107-5240 is a star in the southern part of the constellation Phoenix, about 36,000 light years away from Earth  . Because of its great distance from Earth, the star shines around 10,000 times weaker than the stars that can just barely be seen in the night sky with the naked eye. Its age is estimated at 12 to 15 billion years, which makes it a second generation star - it is said to have been formed around 1 billion years after the Big Bang .

Until the discovery of HE 1327-2326 in March 2005, HE 0107-5240 was considered the star with the lowest metal content (about 200,000 times less metal than our sun, [Fe / H] = −5.3).
