history

HKB Bank headquarters in Frankfurt am Main

Originally, the bank was founded in 1958 as a classic branch bank "Handel und Kredit GmbH & Co. KG" in the North Rhine-Westphalian town of Altena by Wilhelm Gschwendter. It acted as a private bank and operated a trading business at the same time . From 2004 to 2010 the bank belonged to the Cerberus Group , which the bank had taken over in order to take over the building financier BHW together with Postbank . Handel und Kredit GmbH & Co. KG had total assets of over EUR 190 million in 2006 and total assets of over EUR 135 million in 2007. In January 2010 the HKB Bank was taken over by Dutch investors. The bank branches were closed at the end of 2010. In order to offer the products not only regionally, the change to a direct bank was completed in 2011 and the company headquarters relocated to the banking metropolis of Frankfurt am Main. Since then, the bank has been run as a specialist bank for mortgage lending and investments. In November 2012, the BaFin issued a deposit acceptance and loan ban, which was lifted in July 2015. Since then, however, the bank has only been allowed to make deposits of max. Accept 10,000 euros per customer. The total customer deposits may not exceed EUR 38.95 million, they may not grant large loans or loans to organs.

In June 2017, the BaFin issued another ban on accepting deposits and loans. The shareholders previously decided to stop all new business and to completely reduce customer deposits and the loan portfolio. As a result, customer deposits fell from EUR 32.2 million at the end of 2016 to EUR 7.7 million at the end of 2018.
