HMS Confiance

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

At least six ships in the British Royal Navy were named HMS Confiance from the French word for self-confidence:

  • the first HMS Confiance was a sloop with 20 guns, originally the French privateer Confiance . The ship became famous in 1800 when its crew, under the command of the famous privateer captain Robert Surcouf , captured the British East Indiaman Kent after a bitter battle . In 1805 the Confiance was seized by the British frigate HMS Loire , taken over by the Royal Navy and decommissioned in 1810.
  • the second HMS Confiance was an 18-gun sloop that was launched in 1813 and sank off the Irish coast in 1822 with the entire crew.
  • the third HMS Confiance was a 36-gun frigate launched in 1814, fell into the hands of the Americans at the Battle of Plattsburgh that same year and was sold by them in 1825.
  • the fourth HMS Confiance was a paddle-wheel drive gunboat launched in 1827 and retired in 1873.
  • the fifth HMS Confiance was a tug that was launched in 1884 and was used in World War II.
  • the sixth HMS Confiance was a tugboat launched in 1955.
