HMS Edinburgh (D97)
The HMS Edinburgh was a destroyer of Type 42 (Sheffield Class) of the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom . Her nickname is Fortress of the Sea .
history
In 1990 the ship was upgraded with the CIWS Phalanx weapon system. In 1994 she took part in the 50th anniversary celebrations of the D-Day landings in Normandy. Then she was ordered to the South Atlantic in 1998, off the Falkland Islands , where she guarded various South American connections. In January 2003 she was ordered to the Persian Gulf to take part in the Second Gulf War against the dictator Saddam Hussein. Since 2004 she has been cruising in the Mediterranean as part of the war on terror. Between 2004 and 2008 some modifications of the armament took place. On June 6, 2013, the HMS Edinburgh was decommissioned as the last Sheffield-class ship in Portsmouth. The ship was scrapped in Aliağa .
