HMS Investigator

Ten different British ships were named HMS Investigator . One of them was renamed before it was launched. The prefix HMS - sometimes written with punctuation as HMS - is an acronym or abbreviation for His Majesty's Ship or Her Majesty's Ship and identifies the ship as part of the British Royal Navy .

Ship list

  • HMS Investigator (1798) was a ship originally armed with 22 cannons, which was purchased in 1798 and put into service under the name HMS Xenophon . In 1801 the ship was renamed the HMS Investigator and used as a research ship . It was scrapped in 1872.
  • HMS Investigator (1811) was a brig with 16 guns that was launched in 1811 and was used as a research ship. From 1837 the ship was used as a police ship and was scrapped in 1857.
  • HMS Investigator (1823) was a sloop that was purchased in Indian waters for research purposes in 1823. Her further fate is not known.
  • HMS Investigator (1848) was a research ship that was purchased in 1848 and used in the search for the Franklin Expedition . In 1853 the ship was left behind in the ice of the Canadian Arctic and was rediscovered in 2010.
  • HMS Investigator (1861) was a wooden paddle steamer that was used to explore the rivers in Gabon and the Niger in Africa. He ran 1861 from the pile and was sent to the authorities in 1869 Lagos ( Nigeria sold)
  • HMS Investigator (1881) was a wooden paddle steamer that was used for research purposes in river areas. It was launched in 1881 and sold in 1906.
  • HMS Investigator (1888) was a paddle steamer intended for research purposes. Originally called HMS Investigator , it was renamed to HMS Research in 1887, before it was launched .
  • HMS Investigator (1903) was originally a steam-powered yacht owned by railroad magnate William Kissam Vanderbilt under the name Consuelo . In 1903 she was bought by the Royal Navy and converted into a research ship under the name HMS Investigator . This was renamed HMS Sealark in 1904 and was used for hydrographic tasks in China and Australia. In 1919 it was sold to a trading company.

  • HMIS Investigator (1934) was a Royal Indian Navy research vessel that was purchased in 1934. It was sold in 1951.
