HMS Pomone

Several warships of the British Royal Navy were named HMS Pomone after Pomona , a Roman goddess.

  • The first HMS Pomone was originally a French 44-gun frigate that was captured by the Royal Navy in 1794 and put into service. It was decommissioned in 1802. Due to its excellent sailing characteristics, it served as a model for the construction of several British frigates.
  • The second HMS Pomone was a frigate with 38 cannons, which was launched in 1805 and was lost in 1811 due to shipwreck at the so-called "Needles", Isle of Wight .
  • The third HMS Pomone was also a 38-gun frigate, originally the French Astrée , which fell into British hands when Mauritius was conquered in 1810. She was taken over by the Royal Navy and scrapped in 1816.
