HMS Swordfish

Several ships in the British Royal Navy were named HMS Swordfish after the swordfish

  • The first Swordfish was a 330 ton destroyer launched in 1895 and sold in 1910.
  • The second Swordfish was launched in 1916 as the S1 submarine . She was converted into a patrol boat in 1917 and renamed Swordfish .
  • The third Swordfish was an S-class submarine that was launched in 1931 and disappeared without a trace in the English Channel in 1940 with a crew of 40. When the wreck was discovered near the Isle of Wight in 1983 , it turned out that the Swordfish had run into a mine.
