Hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The name hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene , or HTPB for short , is a collective name for butadiene rubber ( polybutadiene ), the free molecule ends of which have hydroxyl groups . They are polyols with a long hydrocarbon chain ( English hydrocarbon polyol ).

The molecular mass is typically around 3000, the hydroxyl functionality , that is the average number of OH groups per molecule, around 2 to 2.5.

HTPB is often used as a rubber-like carrier in solid rocket engines. Together with aluminum , it forms the reducing agent . Both shares are around 15%. The oxidizing agent , usually ammonium perchlorate , contributes 70% to the fuel mass.
