Ha'il ( Arabic حائل, DMG Ḥāʾil ) is a city in the north of the Najd with 267,005 inhabitants (2004 census).
The oasis town of Ha'il is the capital of the province of the same name and is located on the southern edge of the Nefud desert . It gained importance through its location on the pilgrimage route between Baghdad and Mecca and through once close trade relations with Najaf .
In addition, Ha'il was the capital of the tribal empire of part of the Shammar under the Āl Rashīd dynasty until the beginning of the 20th century . Since the forcible integration of the area into Saudi Arabia in 1921 by Ibn Saud of the Saud dynasty , the city has been an important administrative center for the northern areas of the country.
