Hair rinses (also: conditioners) are used for hair care . They are used after shampooing and prevent electrostatic charging of the hair.

history

Natural oils have been used to make hair supple for centuries. Modern hair conditioners were created in the 20th century. Finally, Édouard Pinaud presented a product called Brilliantine in Paris . The product should make men's hair soft and supple. Since this invention, modern research has also contributed to the development of new conditioners.

use

Conditioners are usually massaged into the lengths and ends of the hair after each hair wash. A few centimeters are left out at the hairline so that it stays in place.

A basic distinction is made between rinse-off rinses and leave-in rinses. Rinse-off conditioners are applied after shampooing. After a short exposure time, the hair is rinsed thoroughly with water. Leave-in conditioners, on the other hand, are not rinsed out after evenly applied and remain in the hair.

ingredients

Hair conditioners are available in different designs. You can find gels , creams , lotions , sprays and viscous liquids. Basically, these are emulsions with refatting as the main active ingredient. In addition, fatty alcohols , fatty oils , silicones , weak organic acids , fragrances , conditioning agents , humectants , emulsifiers , water, essential oils , consistency enhancers, plant extracts, buffers , paraffins and additives can be found.

effect

The outermost layer of hair is rich in keratin , which can be deprotonated when washing , causing the hair to become negatively charged. Positive charged ions of the acidic surfactants in the conditioner can prevent this electrostatic charge. The ingredients of the conditioner can also make it easier to comb and reduce split ends . In addition, the hair looks fuller and is supple and smooth. Dry hair becomes lightly oiled and retains its moisture. In the case of oily hair, an insulating layer is deposited on the hair, which delays the re-oiling.
