The Haberhaus in the Neustadt of Schaffhausen was built in 1592/1593 as a granary for oats and barley . After several conversions, it is now used as a restaurant and residential building.

Building description

The Haberhaus is a utility building with a symmetrical alley facade divided by door arches and stone cross windows. The western outer front, originally closed for defense, was in line with the city wall. The ground floor was designed as a Gothic columned hall with a central round stair tower. There are air shafts and light niches on the side walls. Drainage holes for the grain stored above were built into the top of the vault. The house has a large vaulted cellar.

history

The merchant Josua Baumann-Peyer had the building built in 1592/93. The Haberhaus took over the management of the Allerheiligen monastery at the beginning of the 17th century. In 1852 it became the property of the city of Schaffhausen.

Conversions

In 1858 the west facade was broken through and a passage to the Haberhaussteg was built. The footbridge leads over Grabenstrasse and the railroad tracks to the Fäsenstaubpark. In 1943 two more arched openings were broken on the west side and the gates to the new town were removed.

Herrenacker multi-storey car park

In the 1980s there were plans to build a multi-storey car park under the Herrenacker area that was adjacent to Neustadt and used as a parking lot. The exit tunnel should have been built under the Haberhaus, with the vaulted cellar serving as a tunnel. The building permit was challenged before the Federal Supreme Court, which ultimately approved the objections and revoked the building permit. The parking garage was realized in a modified form at the end of the 90s.

Renovation 2005

The house was extensively renovated in 2005. The Gothic columned hall has been used as a restaurant since then. A stage was built into the vaulted cellar. A culture club is now being operated there. The upper floors were converted into apartments.
