history

The lands around Cocoyoc were part of the territory granted to Hernán Cortés in 1521 in recognition of the conquest of Mexico. His descendants sold parts of the land to farmers who started growing sugar cane and erected the first buildings in 1560. After the owners were given permission to operate a sugar mill in 1614, factory halls, residential buildings and a chapel were built . At the end of the 17th century, the hacienda comprised 366 acres of irrigated land. An aqueduct was built at the beginning of the 19th century . Parts of the buildings were destroyed during the Mexican Revolution and the land was divided among the peasants after the fighting ended in 1921. The Hacienda Cocoyoc now only had 186 acres of land. In 1957, Paulino Rivera Torres acquired the estate and converted it into a luxury hotel, which opened in 1968. The Hotel Hacienda Cocoyoc is one of the most beautiful spa hotels in Mexico today .
