Hacker emblem: the glider

The hacker emblem is a logo proposed in October 2003 by the hacker and programmer Eric Steven Raymond for the entire Linux, open source, GNU and BSD hacker culture. While there were previously only more specific symbols, such as the Tux for Linux, the Gnu of the Free Software Foundation or the daemon of the BSD community, all hackers should now identify themselves with this symbol (regardless of the operating system or license used). However, this specifically does not refer to hackers in the field of computer security , but to the open source and free software community. Raymond emphasizes that using the symbol does not claim to be a hacker. It is only meant to express sympathy with the goals and values of the hackers and their way of life.

The hacker emblem does a sailor ( Engl. Glider ) from Conway's Game of Life is. There he is an oscillating structure that moves in constant change across the pitch.

In the English-speaking hacker culture, the sailor has spread very quickly, in contrast, in the German-speaking countries, it has hardly established itself so far.

In addition to the graphic version, variants in ASCII art are also common.
