Hacker News , also abbreviated HN is a social news - web site that primarily programmers , entrepreneurs and business owners respond. The content of the news mostly comes from the field of IT and business start-ups . The site is maintained by Paul Graham's investment firm Y Combinator . However, the content can also come from other subject areas. The guiding principle is that any content that satisfies intellectual curiosity is desired .

history

The site was founded by Paul Graham in February 2007. Originally the page was called Startup News, occasionally News.YC. On August 14, 2007 the site got its current name. The site was developed as a project by Y Combinator, among other things to try out and improve the programming language Arc , which Graham helped develop.

At the end of March 2014, Graham ended his leadership role at Y Combinator and left the website maintenance to the incubator staff.

Vision, methods and criticism

Although the basic idea of the site was to build a community similar to the early days of Reddit , Hacker News has no way of giving a post a negative rating; There is only the option of evaluating positively or not at all. There is also a way to report spam . To get to the main page, a message required 100 positive reviews in 2013.

Graham hopes the Eternal September can be avoided at HN . On the side, automated filters work against flaming and spam. Likewise Hellbanning practiced and integrated software that is designed to prevent voting round select specific news with intent upwards.

According to a 2013 TechCrunch report, Graham said there were complaints that there was a bias in the selection of topics towards news related to Y Combinator in particular. The founder replied that there was no such bias. He added that he was often accused of having such distortions, as well as censorship on the site.
