history

In 1822 Johann Heinrich Scharpff created a landing site at the Rheinschanze, which was currently a fortified bridgehead. A warehouse was built next to a crane to store the goods that were delivered and transported away.

In the years of the Second World War , the port was almost completely destroyed.

The Ludwigshafen port operations were founded in 1960 in order to meet the growing demands made by shipping.

Environmentally hazardous substances, which are increasingly being transported on the Rhine, led to the creation of the northern port, which went into operation in 1977 and has since been operated by BASF in close cooperation with the port operations of Ludwigshafen.
