Level tower of the chamber lock in Ludwigshafen

The former chamber lock is a monument in Ludwigshafen am Rhein .

history

The chamber lock was built together with the Luitpoldhafen in the period from 1894 to 1897. The lock was necessary to prevent a current from the Rhine through the harbor basin, as the other end of the harbor basin is about 2.2 km downstream.

In the 1960s it was decommissioned, and in 1967 the swing bridge and the lock gate on the north side were dismantled. A dam that was subsequently built has since then firmly connected the tower to the park island .

Tower with level clock

The associated, around 20-meter-high level tower made of sandstone was built by the Royal Speyer Road and River Construction Office around 1900; He is now a listed building . It has a square floor plan and has a level clock at its upper end that shows the level in the harbor. Similar to a church tower, the level tower has dials on all four sides so that the level indicator can be seen from all directions. The outlines of the former lock chamber and other technical details can still be seen on the tower today. The display mechanism contained therein comes from the Karlsruhe Institute Otto Behm . The tower stands on a paved terrace and tapers between the strong cornice surrounding the lower third of the height and the approximately cube-shaped structure with the level clock, which protrudes slightly above another cornice.

The level mechanics has not been in operation since 2015, it shows a level of 3 meters, which is independent of the actual water level.

The tower is owned by the Ludwigshafen am Rhein port operations .
