Building and exhibition
The port museum, which was founded in 1992, is housed in a former tobacco warehouse from 1869 directly on the Quai de Citadelle on the Bassin de Commerce , the port basin directly at the old center of Dunkirk. The exhibition and the information boards of the port museum provide information about the herring fishery in the Middle Ages , the sea wars during the time of European expansion, the cod fishery near Iceland , the commercial port in modern times, the destruction of the Second World War and the modern industrial port. A rich collection of ship models is presented on the top floor . The museum was founded on the personal initiative of former dock workers who had put together the collection from the 1970s. The museum also has a documentation center ( center de documentation ), bookstore and function rooms.
