The Hakone Shrine ( Jap. 箱根神社 , Hakone-jinja ) is a Shinto shrine on the banks of Lake Ashi in the Japanese city of Hakone in the district Ashigarashimo of Kanagawa Prefecture . The shrine is also known as Hakone Gongen ( 箱根 権 現 ).
history
The shrine was founded in 757 during the reign of Emperor Kōshō . The original shrine is said to be on the top of Mount Komagatake . Part of it, known today as Hakone-Mototsumiya, can still be found today on the top of the mountain. The shrine was later moved to the shores of Lake Ashi. The pacification of the nine-headed dragon, who lives on the bottom of Lake Ashi, by the priest Mangan was given as the reason for the establishment.
Minamoto no Yorimasa prayed at this shrine for guidance and protection after his defeat in the Battle of Ishibashiyama during the Gempei War (1180–1185). After being appointed shogun , he became a patron of the shrine. In the Kamakura period (1185-1333) the shrine became very popular with the samurai. This support lasted through the entire Sengoku period . Toyotomi Hideyoshi's army destroyed the shrine during the Battle of Odawara by setting it on fire. Tokugawa Ieyasu had the shrine rebuilt and granted him 200 koku from the proceeds. The Tokugawa shogunate continues to support the shrine. The shrine has had its current form since 1667.
Shrunken kami
Three kami are inscribed in the Hakone Gongen : Ninigi no Mikoto , Konohanasakuyahime no Mikoto and Hoori no Mikoto . The three are also known collectively as the Hakone Ōkami ( 箱根 大 神 ).
