The Hala umenia / Kunsthalle Košice is an exhibition center for modern and contemporary art in the eastern Slovak city of Košice , in the Staré Mesto district (Old Town) . The building designed by Ladislav Greč originally served as a swimming pool. Construction work took place in the years 1957–1960. It was not until 2013 that the building was given a completely new function: as an exhibition center. Hala umenia is historically the first art hall in Slovakia.
history
The building on the edge of the old town was built between 1957 and 1960 according to plans by the Slovak architect Ladislav Greč . The building served as a swimming pool until the 1970s. Since then the structure has not been used. In 2013 the city of Košice was awarded the title of European Capital of Culture . On this occasion, the old swimming pool was converted into a new cultural center, which should not only serve the visual arts, but also as a concert hall. The redesign of the art gallery comes from the KOPA Design architectural studio. The grand opening of the Kunsthalle took place on July 3, 2013. At the first exhibition three artists were presented: Tony Cragg , Gyula Kosice and Constantin Brâncuși .
