Halit Çelenk

Halit Çelenk (* 1922 in Antakya ; † May 5, 2011 ) was a Turkish lawyer and politician .

Çelenk graduated from Istanbul University with a law degree in 1944 and married his fellow student Şekibe Sayar.

In 1948 he began his professional career as a lawyer in Samsun . In 1962 he joined the Labor Party of Turkey with his wife and was elected to the party executive. In 1971 he represented Deniz Gezmiş , Yusuf Aslan and Hüseyin İnan, who were later sentenced to death in the THKO trial . He was present during the execution of the sentence; He commented on this with the words: “ I cannot describe my helplessness during these minutes, which is the worst part of my 87-year life. "

Çelenk has had cancer since 2002 . On May 5, 2011, the day before the death of Deniz Gezmiş, Yusuf Aslan and Hüseyin İnan, all of whom were sentenced to death in the THKO trial, he succumbed to his illness.
