The hall petrel ( Macronectes halli ), also known as the northern giant petrel , is a predominantly dark-colored breeding bird of the sub-Antarctic zone.
It belongs to the genus of giant petrels and is equal to the albatross with a wingspan of over 2 m . Food consists of sick and dead seals , penguins , crustaceans, fish and cephalopods . The breeding season is about 60 days. The animals are sexually mature after four to seven years. They are excellent migratory birds.
The common petrel breeds mainly on islands north of Antarctica such as Gough , Marion , Crozet , Kerguelen and Chatham and, in contrast to the closely related giant petrel, is a single breeder.
Just like the giant petrel, the sea petrel is also called "stinker" by seafarers because they vomit oily and stinking stomach contents when they are frightened. This enables you to get up in the air more quickly.
