Hall of Railway Heritage

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hall of Railway Heritage was a railway museum in Bangkok , Thailand .

Location and history

The museum was in the western part of Chatuchak Park (Kampaeng Phet 3 Rd., Chatuchak), Bangkok. The large exhibition hall featured important exhibits and was managed by the Thai Railfan Club . Steam locomotives, railroad cars and railroad models were exhibited there. The history of the worldwide development of the railroad was explained. It was permanently closed on October 23, 2012 due to falling visitor numbers.

Exhibits

Various steam locomotives, diesel locomotives and railroad cars as well as a rolling lending library were exhibited. The showpiece was a hospital train, for which King Rama V. had ordered teak from Brazil, and then had the train built in England, from where it was transported by ship via Malaya to Bangkok. It was intended to improve medical care in remote cities and provinces.

The two-axle Japanese steam locomotive No. 10089 made by the Japanese company Kyosan Kogyo was a narrow-gauge locomotive that was never used. She had been ordered to bring sugar cane from the plantations to the sugar factory. It was probably the last locomotive from the Japanese manufacturer before it was closed. It was in great shape. Today it is used in the Thong Somboon Club theme park.
