history

Share for RM 1000 in the Breslauer Hallenschwimmbad AG from May 22, 1943

In 1894, the chairman of the Breslauer swimming club, G. Kallenbach, and the municipal sanitary councilor Eugen Kabierske founded the Breslauer indoor swimming pool AG. The shareholders included u. a. the Breslau bookseller Heinrich von Korn , Royal Government Builder Hans Lutsch , the surgeon Johann Freiherr von Mikulicz-Radecki and the city planner Richard Plüddemann .

The plot of land for the new building was between Zwingerstraße, Kleine Groschengasse and the former Wehnergasse - where the Jäkels bathing establishment was previously located. In the architecture competition in May 1895, Werdelmann's design was selected from 44 submitted projects. Construction work began in September 1895 and the original building was officially opened on June 14, 1897. It was located in the southwest corner of today's complex and, in addition to the swimming pool, contained a steam bath , the spa department, a restaurant and ancillary rooms.

Expansion of the building began on March 1, 1907. On October 19, 1908, a second indoor swimming pool for women was opened in the presence of Princess Charlotte von Sachsen-Meiningen . The water tower was also built at that time. On April 1, 1909, the Turkish bath , a filter system, the laundry and the engine room were added. From 1925 to 1927 two more floors were built with bath tubs , a solarium and a snack room. In 1928, swimming pool No. 1 was extended to the standard length. Between 1929 and 1930 two more swimming pools were built for boys and girls.

During the fighting for Breslau in 1945, the building suffered only minor damage, so that operations could already be resumed in the summer of 1945. During the renovation work from 1960 to 1962, many Art Nouveau details were removed from the interior. In 1976 a filter system was installed in the disused swimming pool No. 4.

The indoor swimming pool was entered on May 3, 1977 under A / 2499/347 / Wm in the register of architectural monuments of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship.
