Hallig Frisian

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hallig Frisian is a North Frisian dialect that is native to the North Frisian Halligen in North Frisia . The dialect is considered to be critically endangered. In 1972 around 20 percent of Hallig residents spoke Frisian; For the Halligen population, which is small anyway, this means that even then no more than 60 people still spoke the language. Current language statistics do not exist.

From a linguistic perspective, Hallig Frisian is a dialect of mainland Frisian. It is considered to be the dialect closest to Strander Frisian, which became extinct in the 17th century on Nordstrand and in the 18th century on Pellworm . It also has a lot of resemblance to the South Goeshard Frisian , which died out around 1980 .
