The collar carpet shark ( Parascyllium variolatum , syn .: Hemiscyllium variolatum , Parascyllium nuchalis ) is a real shark from the family of collar carpet sharks . It lives off the south coast of Australia , mainly between mainland Australia and Tasmania and off the southwest coast.

features

The species is very elongated and slender, and reaches a length of up to 91 cm. The mouth is short and broadly rounded, the head flat, with slit-shaped eyes and without barbels . The front dorsal fin is clearly behind the pelvic fins , the anal fin is clearly in front of the second dorsal fin. The coloration is light to dark brown with black and white spots all over the body and large black spots on all fins. At the level of the gills, the species has a wide, black band with small white spots, to which it owes its name.

Way of life

The collar carpet shark lives on the continental shelf at depths of up to 180 m above a sandy bottom, in rock reefs, kelp forests and seagrass meadows . Like most sharks, it is a predatory fish and feeds primarily on invertebrates. Young fish like to hide under rocks and sediments. It is oviparous and harmless to humans.
