Loki-Fögrufjöll (Hamarinn or Lokahryggur) is a volcano under the Vatnajökull glacier.

The volcano is located within the Bárðarbunga volcanic system, but is independent of the Bárðarbunga itself.

Tephra was ejected in the 1910 eruption , but there may also have been subglacial eruptions in 1986 and 1991, and 2006 and 2008.

The 2011 eruption

On July 12, 2011, a glacier erupted due to a subglacial eruption of Loki-Fögrufjöll. The glacier burst from Köldukvíslarjökull, part of the Vatnajökull (glacier) in southeast Iceland, which is located in an area that was not previously thought to be a geothermal area. The tidal wave flowed down the Svedja River into the Hágöngulón (reservoir) and the Þórisvatn (lake). A tidal wave had never been recorded on this part of the glacier before, although the volcano may have had subglacial eruptions in 1986 and 1991 at various locations. The level of the Hágöngulón rose by 70 centimeters during the tidal wave (accessed on December 5, 2011).
