Hágöngulón is a reservoir in the highlands of Iceland . It is located in the municipality of Ásahreppur .

Reservoir and power plant

In this 37 km² large lake, the rivers Köldukvísl and Sveðja are dammed, which flow from the glacier tongue Köldukvíslarjökull in the west of Vatnajökull .

The power plant belonging to the lake is operated by the Landsvirkjun energy company and has an output of 200 GWh per year.

Surname

The lake takes its name from the volcanic mountains Nyrðri- Háganga (1278 m) and Syðri-Háganga (1284 m), which lie on the west and south banks of the reservoir.

geology

The area belongs to the Hágöngur volcano, which in turn is part of the Tungnafellsjökull volcanic system , with a high-temperature area under the lake that becomes visible when the water level is lower in winter.

Former slope

Under the lake is an old track that led from Sprengisandur to Vonarskarð .
