geology
The area belongs to the Hágöngur volcano, which in turn is part of the Tungnafellsjökull volcanic system , with a high-temperature area under the lake that becomes visible when the water level is lower in winter.
Former slope
Under the lake is an old track that led from Sprengisandur to Vonarskarð .
