The Vonarskarð is a secluded mountain pass in the highlands of Iceland .
Location and transport links
It is located at an altitude of 900–940 m southeast of Tungnafellsjökull and northwest of Bárðarbunga , part of Vatnajökull . A slope leads from the Sprengisandsleið from the south into this area. A branch of the Austurleið leads
here from the north. Between the two sections there is a pathless distance of a good 14 kilometers.
Important data
The pass lies at an altitude of 900–940 m and is 12–13 km wide between the glaciers, but only 2–3 km wide in the valley. Its length is approx. 15-20 km.
Watershed
This is where the Kaldakvísl rises and flows south to the Tungnaá and on to the Þjórsá . To the north the waters flow to the Skjálfandafljót .
The source streams of both rivers flow from the glaciers on both sides of the valley. Often they meet in the flooded valley and then flow in both directions into the lowlands.
Volcanism
The two high temperature areas at Vonarskarð are assigned to the volcanic system of Tungnafellsjökull.
On the southern western slopes of the valley you can find metamorphic rock with a special color.
