The Austurleið is a highland road or track in Iceland . It provides a west-east connection between the Sprengisandur runway Sprengisandsleið (F26) in the central Icelandic highlands , the Askja volcano (via the Öskjuleið , F894 strait), the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river and the area around the Kárahnjúkar power station to the lake Lagarfljót . Between Sprengisandur and Kárahnjúkar power station there is a gravel road with the number F910, from the power station to the confluence with road 933 ( Fljótsdalsvegur ) near Lagarfljót, the road is paved and therefore bears the number 910 (without the Prefix F, which in Iceland stands for gravel roads in the highlands). With a different course it was numbered earlier than F98.

course

The Austurleið branches off near the Tungnafellsjökull east of the Sprengisandsleið. It then runs north of the Trölladyngja volcano . Until 1990 the runway ran south of Trölladyngja as F98 and is known in this section as Gæsavatnaleið , named after the small lakes Gæsavötn in the western part of the route. This old route is dangerous, no longer part of the official Icelandic road system and its use is often discouraged. The new route ("Ný Gæsavatnaleið") north of the Trölladyngja was opened on June 25, 1991. Like all Icelandic highland slopes, this one can only be driven on with suitable all -wheel drive vehicles and the necessary knowledge and safety precautions.

At the junction of Öskjuleið LF88 , Austurleið continues eastwards, over Jökulsá á Fjöllum and Fiskidalsháls pass , from where it heads south to the Kárahnjúkar power station . There the highland road F910 becomes asphalt road 910 and finally ends at road 933, the Fljótsdalsvegur , not far from the confluence of the Jökulsá í Fljótsdal with the lake Lagarfljót . This paved part of Austurleið is also known under the name Kárahnjúkavegur .

Also numbered as road 910 is the Laugarfellsvegur strait , which branches off at Laugarfell Mountain to the east of the Kárahnjúkar dam.
