The Öskjuleið LF88 is a highland road in the northeast of Iceland .

It branches off a little west of the Jökulsá á Fjöllum from the ring road R1 to the south and always runs west of the river. At the junction to the west is the Hrossaborg, an explosion crater about 500 m in diameter. The route to Herðubreiðarlindir is 59 km long, and two rivers have to be crossed. Coming from the north first the Grafarlandaá below a small waterfall and then twice the Lindaá, lastly at the oasis in the Ódáðahraun .

Even if Öskjuleið is the Icelandic word for Askja path, it ends after another 21 km at Austurleið LF910 . After 13 km you will reach the Dreki Hut (→ Drekagil ) via this piste . Here the Öskjuvatnsvegur begins LF894, which after 8 km reaches the parking lot at Öskjuop. From there you can hike to Öskjuvatn and Víti . In the Iceland Road Guide from 1988, the continuous route was called Öskjuleið.

Like all Fjallvegir , these roads are closed in winter. The F88 was launched between June 14th and 26th for the past few years. opened again. For the F894, it can be until July 24th.
