Waterfall in the Drachenschlucht

The Drekagil ( Dragon Gorge ) is a gorge in the crater rim of the Askja volcano in Iceland .

It is located in the Dyngjufjöll massif about five kilometers east of Lake Öskjuvatn . There are bizarrely shaped lava rocks on both sides of the gorge, one of which is reminiscent of a dragon. Hence the name "Dragon Gorge".

At the exit of the gorge is Dreki , a mountain hut that is managed in summer and offers overnight stays in several huts and on a campsite. From here a hiking trail leads through the gorge, which ends after about 30 minutes at a waterfall .
