Herðubreið [ 'hεrðʏ̩prεiˑð ] ( German: the broad- shouldered ) is considered to be the "Queen of the mountains of Iceland " with its striking shape of a table volcano . The mountain is 1682 meters high and is located in the Icelandic highlands in the Ódáðahraun desert , not far from the Askja volcano .
Important data
The volcano, part of the Askja volcanic system , has a summit crater and year-round snowfields, but no glacier. The majestic impression made by the tabular volcano is also due to the considerable differences in altitude compared to its immediate surroundings. It towers over the surrounding lava fields by around 1000 meters. The mountain is built very symmetrically, its base almost a perfect ring about 8–9 km in circumference. Its slopes are very steep and fragile. The highest peak towers over the table surface by another 200 meters and lies on the northeast edge of the summit crater.
geology
The lower part of the tabular volcano consists of palagonite , the lower parts are evidently formed under a glacier. At the top, where the lava emerged over the glacier, basalt lava layers take over .
Rockclimbing
Herðubreið has long been considered impassable. It was not until 1908 that the geologist Hans Reck , the Icelandic travel companion and later husband of Ina von Grumbkow , and his companion Sigurður Sumarliðason managed to climb the mountain for the first time. Nowadays, alpinists mostly climb from the northwest side.
Herðubreiðarlindir
At the foot of the mountain is the Herðubreiðarlindir oasis , from which you can start hiking. In earlier times, outlaws lived here , such as B. the notorious Fjalla-Eyvindur , who were excluded from society for crimes.
Part of the Vatnajokull National Park
As early as 1974 the mountain and its immediate surroundings were placed under nature protection. Herðubreið is now part of Vatnajökull National Park .
Trivia
- The Boeing 757-200 of Icelandair with the flag TF-FIA is named after the volcano.
